According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 20% of victims of human trafficking find themselves in these situations through acquaintances or during social events.
Why this happens, in particular, is explained by trainers of preventive measures of the Light of Hope NGO during information sessions on safe migration and job search.
"People trust recommendations from strangers less. But if someone they know, for example, recommends a job, it inspires more trust. But human traffickers are very good at manipulation. That's why they specifically develop such schemes when victims are lured by their relatives or friends," explains trainer Kateryna Berezhna.

How to protect yourself and who to trust then? Check all the information:
- discuss the terms of cooperation;
- carefully study the content of the contract;
- sign it only when everything is clear;
- cooperate with official companies.
Trainers provide even more information about safe travel and employment during information sessions held as part of the project "Ensuring a comprehensive response in Poltava region to protect victims of war-related violence, gender-based violence, human trafficking or exploitation," which is implemented by the Light of Hope NGO within the framework of the Protection Program of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Office in Ukraine with funding from the Government of Sweden.
