Harm reduction programs can help improve our society

According to international experts, to stop the epidemic of HIV / AIDS is necessary to use a variety of therapeutic programs for at least 60% of drug users. In other words – the need to deal with drug addicts. For this purpose, foreign experts even developed a strategy of harm reduction - the principle of conservation of health of each member of society, whose purpose is not to ban unhealthy behavior, and a partial reduction of harmful effects.
This strategy consists of several components: rehabilitation, treatment and prevention efforts (counseling, support groups). But the greatest result gives the so-called outreach: needle exchange, early rapid testing with further support to medical facilities, counseling "peer"-and substitution maintenance therapy. For maximum effect, and assistance to the greatest number of drug users in this paper are utilized and medical facilities.
In Poltava is the 6th year of being implemented harm reduction programs, in particular, vicariously-maintenance therapy. Today, her clients are more than 400 people: - those who have recently used drugs by injection, stealing to get another dose, are at risk of HIV infection of their loved ones. Now they regularly come to a medical facility, drink a medicine that blocks the craving for opium and go to work. In addition, each of them is engaged in specially allocated for the social worker who advises clients, accompany them to other medical institutions, helps to restore the documents to resolve the problematic issues with the police.
